Black grapes are among the most popular table grape varieties in the world — and Australia grows some exceptional ones. With a climate well-suited to producing fruit with deep colour, firm texture and excellent flavour, Australian black grapes have earned a strong following in both domestic and international markets.

Here’s a closer look at the black grape varieties grown in Australia, when they’re available, and what makes them worth seeking out.

What are black grapes?

“Black grapes” is the common name for table grape varieties with deep purple, blue-black or near-black skin. Despite the name, the flesh inside is typically pale green or translucent — it’s the skin that gives them their characteristic colour and much of their flavour.

Black grapes tend to have a rich, slightly more complex flavour than green or red varieties — often described as sweet with subtle earthy or berry-like notes. They’re popular for eating fresh, and their striking appearance makes them a standout on any fruit platter or retail display.

Black grape varieties grown in Australia

Not all black grapes are the same. Australian growers cultivate a range of black table grape varieties, each with its own shape, texture and harvest window. At Lazzara Fruits, we grow two premium black seedless varieties:

Sweet Sapphire™
One of the more distinctive black grape varieties you’ll find. Sweet Sapphire™ is large and tubular in shape — long and finger-like — with a satisfying crunch and a clean, sweet flavour. Available from February through to May, it’s a late-to-mid season variety that holds up well and has excellent market appeal thanks to its unusual and eye-catching appearance.

Melody
Melody is a very large, crisp black seedless grape with a bold flavour and impressive size that makes it stand out in the bunch. Like Sweet Sapphire™, it’s available from February through to May. Its size and consistency make it a reliable choice for buyers looking for premium black grapes with strong visual appeal.

Both varieties are seedless, which makes them well-suited to retail and wholesale markets where ease of eating is a priority.

When are black grapes in season in Australia?

Australian black table grapes are generally available from February through to May, sitting in the mid-to-late part of the Australian grape season. The season as a whole typically runs from late October through to May or June, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

This seasonal window aligns well with demand from international markets in the northern hemisphere, where locally grown fresh grapes may be less available during these months. For importers and exporters, Australian black grapes offer a reliable supply of fresh, high-quality fruit during a period that suits their procurement calendars.

What makes Australian black grapes stand out?

A few things set Australian-grown black grapes apart from other origins:

Growing conditions. Robinvale in Victoria — where Lazzara Fruits is based — is a well-established grape-growing region with the warm days and cool nights that favour the development of colour, flavour and sugar levels in table grapes.

Variety access. Australian growers work with world-leading varietal development programs, which means access to newer, premium varieties like Sweet Sapphire™ that have been specifically developed for eating quality and market appeal.

Quality standards. Australian table grapes are grown under strict food safety and quality assurance frameworks. For buyers sourcing fruit for retail or export, that consistency and traceability matters.

Shelf life. Proper pre-cooling and cold chain management from the moment of harvest means Australian black grapes arrive in excellent condition and hold up well throughout distribution.

Are black grapes good for you?

Black grapes are widely regarded as a nutritious choice — they’re a natural source of antioxidants, including compounds found in the skin that give them their deep colour.
